District Band Update: 5:55 PM, Thursday, February 4
The Fairfax County Public Schools are closed Friday, Feburary 5 and through the weekend. There will be no District Band events on Friday or Saturday; however there will be rehearsal tonight, Thursday, February 4. Students are expected to attend to represent Edison and take advantage of this outstanding workshop opportunity with guest conductors and clinicians. (Families should get their money's worth!) The Director of Bands is already on site, and will see the students there. Per the letter sent earlier, there will be no return bus, so students must arrange for timely pick-up transportation home. Thank you, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

On behalf of the Edison Bands, please be safe during the coming weather. (Plenty of safe, indoor practice time is coming with the snow!) See you next week.

Letter from the Director of Bands
Dear District Band Participants and Families,

Due to the upcoming weather, there may be some changes to the district band schedule. I am attaching the latest information to this message (click here) which shows contingency plans to the best of our knowledge at this time. Please use this as a guide in the meantime until the updated itinerary for Friday is posted on www.hayfieldbands.com (should be up by 10 pm Thursday evening.) Important announcements will also be posted here on www.edisonband.com.

If there are any cancelations on Friday there will be no return bus to Edison High School! Please be prepared to make arrangements to pick up your child from Hayfield Secondary school at the end of the event on Friday.

Highlights from the attached:
  • Percussionists report at 5:00 PM, Thursday, February 4, Hayfield Secondary – not a change
  • All others report by 7:00PM, Thursday, February 4, Hayfield Secondary – not a change
  • Pick up at 9:00PM, Thursday, February 4, Hayfield Secondary – not a change
If FCPS cancels anything, there will be no return bus to Edison.
  • If school is canceled on Friday, the event will be canceled.
  • If school is dismissed early than students will need to picked up by noon on Friday.
  • If after school and evening activities are canceled, students need to be picked up by 2:30 PM.
We are not expecting that there will be any rehearsal or concert on Saturday due to the weather. There will likely be a culminating performance at some time on Friday. The timing will depend on the severity and timing of the inclement weather.

Thank you for your patience as we all work with the weather situation and for your support of your child’s music education.

Sincerely,

Kate Reeves, B.Mus., M.M.

Letter from the Director of Bands
Attention all Concert Band and Symphonic Band Students:

Due to the recent and upcoming inclement weather, we will have to make some adjustments to our rehearsal schedule. Please help your band by making every attempt to be at all events leading up to our performance at Festival (March 5th and 6th). Thank you for your flexibility as we all try to adjust for weather issues.

  1. Monday, February 8th - Rehearsals will be extended a half an hour –Concert band 2:30-4:00 and Symphonic 4:00-5:30
  2. If school is canceled on Monday, February 8th or after school activities are canceled, rehearsal will take place the day we return to school (i.e. Tuesday if we are out Monday or Wednesday if we are out both Monday and Tuesday, etc.)
  3. Monday, February 15th - (now a school day) will replace Tuesday, February 16th and rehearsals will be extended a half hour- Concert Band 2:30-4:00 and Symphonic 4:00-5:30
  4. Our pre-festival concert was scheduled for Thursday, February 18th will be rescheduled for Monday, February, 22nd. Time will be announced ASAP as it is dependent on clinician availability.
  5. Continue to check www.edisonbands.com for updated information.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure all students are prepared and comfortable with our selections before we play for judges in March.

Sincerely,

Kate Reeves, B.Mus., M.M.
Director of Bands

Fairfax County is currently enteraining the idea of eliminating elementary level music programs. This would have a significant, lasting negative effect on the quality of music education in Fairfax County, and would undermine the educational opportunities for our community's children. We need your help! Learn more through the Fairfax Arts Coalition for Education or contact your county supervisors online.
