Student leadership in the Edison Bands is a great privilege that carries great responsibility. Members of the student leadership are mentors, guides, assistants, and role models for the other members of the band family.

Rank devices are worn upon the left collar. No other devices should be work on the uniform. This rank guide will show you the proper way to affix a rank device in order to ensure unity, precision, and tradition in our uniforms.

The Senior Drum Major is the commanding officer of the band. As chief student leader, the SDM answers directly to the Director, coordinates with the other student leaders, and carries the responsibility to ensure that every member of the band is supported, prepared, and demonstrates paramount conduct of character at all times. The SDM shall wear one standard silver eagle rank, wings parallel to the top of the collar. The eagle, the symbol of Edison, is the insignia of the ensemble commander’s responsibility.

The Junior Drum Major is a field officer, performing in the ensemble as a performer as well as taking a leadership and conducting role as the situation requires. An assistant to the SDM and the individual generally appointed to ascend to Senior Drum Major the following year, the JDM is both a mentor and a mentee. The JDM shall wear one standard silver oak leaf rank, stem down as shown at left. The oak leaf has been a symbol of field officers throughout the American field and military tradition.

Five captains serve as the chiefs of the major divisions of the band. The Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Guard, and Visual (Marching) Captains coordinate student leaders within their purviews, and bear chief responsibility for ensuring each section in their areas of responsibility is fully prepared. Captains shall wear the traditional insignia of the Captain, two linked silver bars. They must be oriented with the bars perpendicular to the edge of the collar.

Band Officers shall wear the traditional insignia of the Lieutenant, one silver bar, as a sign of their roles in important assistant capacities serving the band at large. It must be oriented as shown at left, the bar perpendicular to the collar.
